Macau has overtaken the world famous gambling destinations of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo in just a few years to become the most profitable gambling destination in the world. This 11 mile resort city in the Pearl River Delta has been transformed almost overnight into a glittering international gaming hotspot that caters to jetfoils full of Chinese from Hong Kong who disembark from the ferries to enjoy all the city has to offer.
These are joined by new arrivals by land from the Chinese border which is located just one mile to the north of Macau. On a typical Saturday night visitors stream into the city at a rate of over 16,000 per hour, their pocketbooks full of disposable cash. Most of them are in Macau for short stays which will be spent almost entirely in one of the 40 city casinos.
