Macau tourism by the Japanese saw a big falloff after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, but the gambling resort is hoping that more Japanese visitors will return to take advantage of special incentives and student tours being offered by the Macau Government Tourist Office.

This organization has sponsored two tourism events in Tokyo which were targeted to companies and schools as a best value travel destination. A seminar held last week in Tokyo helped to educate Japanese travel agents on the many attractive student tour offers that are now available in Macau. During the first half of 2011, there were fewer than 180,000 visitors to Macau from Japan. This represents a decrease of more than 10% from the same period one year ago, but Japan remains the fourth largest market for Macau tourism.
